Visit Lincoln
Cathedral city
Some attractions of Lincoln
Lincoln Castle, Most school children know that in 1066 it was the battle of Hastings, well after the battle William the Conqueror ordered that castles were to be built throughout England and in 1068 the Normans started constructing the Lincoln castle it was one of the first built by the Normans. It was built on the site of a former roman fortress. It dominated the surrounding country side until the Cathedral was built in 1072. Lincoln castle has had lots of renovation work carried out on it over the years and is well worth a visit you can walk around most of the ancient walls, and visit the dungeons that are embedded in the castle walls. It is also well worth the cramped walk up the spiral stair case in the observatory tower, and see the magnificent views over Lincoln city. For the past 900 years Lincoln castle has been used as a prison and court, and some of those prisoners have left their mark in the cemetery the last one to be executed was in 1872. The crown court which is in the grounds of the castle is still in use today.
Lincoln Cathedral Built by the Normans in 1072 it has gone through many changes over the years and was once the tallest building in the world. It remains the tallest cathedral in the Europe with out a spire. Lincoln Cathedral is a prominent landmark on the hill and can be seen from miles away. When you visit the cathedral one of the things to look out for is one of its permanent residents the Lincoln Imp a devilish little Imp very hard to find but if you look up at the right place you can see him.
Steep hill a very steep hill indeed lined with shops, restaurants, tea rooms and pubs it leads from the top of the city high street up to the entrance of the castle to your left and to your right a bit further on, and you’re in the Cathedral.
Brayford pool a large lake in the centre of Lincoln which was a former Roman port linked to the sea via Boston down the river Witham. It is now home to some of the city’s newest and diverse restaurants and night life in the area, most with out side tables and chair’s giving a laid back informal atmosphere, a great place to watch the world go by.
Every December Lincoln Christmas Market is one of the biggest Christmas markets in Europe. The first one was held in 1982 and since then it has grow every year with over 300 stalls of food and curios and fun fair, spreading throughout the Lincoln castle and around the Cathedral and in and around the Lawn area, a huge event over four days, 2009 Christmas Market dates are Thursday 3rd December through to the 6th December. Well worth a look.
