Fireplaces – Make the Right Choice
You can’t beat gathering around the fire on a cold winter’s night with family and friends. Fireplaces not only keep you and your loved ones warm but add a touch of elegance to any room. If you are looking for a brand new fireplace or are simply wanting to upgrade do your research first.
Wood Burning Fireplaces-The Majestic Choice
A wood burning fire is for those who want the full effect. If you want a hearty roaring fire complete with the appealing smell of an open fire and the comforting crackle of thick wood logs this is the perfect choice for you. Wood burning fireplaces are not known for being eco friendly heating solutions. If you decide on this type of fireplace there are plenty of advanced models that reduce air pollution on the market.
Gas Fireplaces-Low Maintenance
If you do not have a chimney but would still like to install beautiful fireplaces in your home, a gas fireplace is the best option. Although slightly less visually effective compared with a wood burning option, a gas fireplace is a popular choice due to the energy efficient nature. A gas option needs little care and attention and is a cleaner option for the home all round.
Electric Fireplaces-Cost Effective
Choosing an electric fireplace for your home is the most cost effective option. They require little cleaning, provide satisfactory warmth while still creating a pleasant and cosy atmosphere. There is no need to create a fire, no mess to clean up afterwards and it has a decorative element for show purposes only.
Fireplace Design-Effortless Beauty
Once you have decided on the type of fireplace you need, you can concentrate on the kind of decorative features you desire. There are plenty of options available whether you want a traditional fireplace or a contemporary feel. Choose from wood, cast iron, stone, marble and more.

Choosing the right Hearth
Choosing the right hearth for your fireplace is not only vital for the finished appearance but vital to ensure it’s compatible with your choice of fire.
We have a varierty of hearths available including – Granite, Tan Granite, Tiled, Limestone, Slate and Decorative Granite.
Why hearth for Which Fuel?
For solid fuel (real fires) we recommend that you use either Granite or Tiled hearths. Slate and Limestone is not recommended due to slate being to soft and scratching very easily and limestone being very porous for the cement under fill as it can seep through to the top surface. (more…)
Fireplace Surrounds… What’s, what?

Fires and Fireplaces have always played an integral part in every home, but over the years fires and fireplaces have evolved from simple fires in the middle of a home where the smoke would have been vented out through the roof lantern to what we have today which normally serves as an element to enhance the grandeur of an interior space.
It wasn’t until the twelfth century when the placement of fireplaces moved from the middle of the room to the wall which allowed for the design of very elaborate, rich, architectural focal points for a room.
Fireplace surrounds also known as mantels, mantelpieces or chimneypieces, originated in medieval times but were then simply a hood that protruded over the grate to catch smoke. The fireplace surrounds used today are part of an overall finish and provide more of a decorative feature.
Fireplace surrounds are made of the following elements:
- Shelf
- Frieze
- Legs or Jambs
- Foot
- Corbels
- Corbels are not always found on fireplace surrounds.

How to repair dents in wooden fireplaces
If you ever have an accident and your wooden surround is left with a dent – all is not lost as 90% of the time it can be repaired.
Repairing a wooden surround is pretty straight forward and relys upon water. The water swells the wood up and simply pops the wood back out. This method will only work though on dents which have not caused the wood to splinter or split.
First of all you will need to gather a couple of items.
- A small cup of hot water
- Your favourite brand of toilet paper.
- Some wax for finishing (we use Fiddies Supreme Wax – Stripped Pine Colour)
Once you have all your items together follow these steps:
- Prepare the damaged area to make sure it is clean from dust and debris
