Choosing the right Hearth

Choosing the right hearth for your fireplace is not only vital for the finished appearance of your home but essential to ensure it’s compatible with your choice of fire.

We have a varierty of hearths available including – Granite, Tiled, Limestone, Slate and Glass.

Which type of hearth should I choose?

For solid fuel (real fires), wood burning stoves and log burners we recommend that you use either Granite or Tiled hearths. Slate and Limestone are not recommended, slate is very soft and liable to scratching very easily, and limestone is very porous and liable to crack.

Granite, Tiled, Slate and Limestone hearths are all ideally suited for Electric or Gas Fireplaces.

What are the options?

Granite

Granite Hearths are available for both solid fuel or multi fuel fires and stoves as well as for gas fires and electric fires.

A wide range of sizes and shapes of black granite hearths are available with an absolute, solid black finish or a honed matt black less polished finish.

Granite for Gas & Electric Fires - Made from a single slab of granite approximately 20mm thick which is sat on 30mm risers. Available in absolute, solid black finish, polished finish or a honed matt black less polished finish

Granite for Solid Fuel or Multi Fuel Fires and Stoves - A slabbed hearth, made from highly polished absolute granite sections to allow for expansion and contraction from the heat. They are filled underneath with a lightweight cement mix which helps dissipate the heat throughout the hearth. Without this heat dissipation the hearth would be put under a great amount of pressure which ultimately causes the hearth to crack. As standard they are 18” in depth to meet building regulations, deeper hearths can be made if required.

Glass

Glass Hearths are available for both solid fuel or multi fuel fires and stoves as well as for gas fires and electric fires.

A wide range of sizes and shapes of smoked glass and transparent glass hearths are available with an constructed from 12mm toughened glass.

Tiled

Tiled Hearths are available for both solid fuel or multi fuel fires and stoves as well as for gas fires and electric fires.

Tiled hearths are a very traditional form of Victorian hearth. Available in a range of patterns to complement your Victorian Fireplace Arched or Tiled Insert. They are made from 6” x 6” tiles which are available in a varierty of colours and patterns. As with the granite hearths for solid fuel these hearths are filled underneath with a lightweight mix.

Natural Stone Hearths

These hearths are only suitable for gas or electric fires and stoves.Made from natural slate or limestone. Available in both Honed slate and Riven slate, Honed slate has a smooth, flat finish whereas Riven slate has a rougher texture and grain providing a more rustic and natural look.
